Meanwhile, we have put the corona period behind us and it is time again for a transcribathon. This is a transcription event where we invite our volunteers to the Botanical Garden, along with herbarium staff, to enter data from herbarium labels on the citizen science platform www.doedat.be.
Transcribathons are organized annually around the world, at the same time, under the banner WeDigBio (Worldwide Engagement for Digitizing Biocollections, global effort to digitize natural history collections).
During WeDigBio, people worldwide will enter as much data of natural history collections as possible through various online platforms. Botanical Garden Meise is also participating in this effort via www.doedat.be!
For this edition of WeDigBio, we will organize a live transcription moment on Thursday, October 12, 2023 in the castle of Botanical Garden Meise from 10 am to 4 pm. So you can join this day whenever you want, the Doe-Dat team will be present throughout. They will also provide snacks and drinks.
During this event, we would like to get our moss projects (Mosses from the Van Heurck Collection) fully completed. Will you participate as well? Afterwards, all data entered during this transcribathon will be put online on the virtual herbarium of Botanical Garden Meise www.botanicalcollections.be so it can be unlocked and used by anyone in the world!
If you cannot attend live but still want to connect, you can also do so online via Zoom.
Would you like to be there? Then sign up through this link.
In addition to helping with the transcriptions of label data, this is also a great time to ask your questions to our experienced staff regarding illegible labels or other problems overwriting labels on herbarium specimens.
More info can be found at wedigbio.org (in English) and www.doedat.be.
If you would also like a behind-the-scenes look at the herbarium, this is also possible on this day! At 09.30 the curator will take you on a unique tour so you can find out why these transcriptions are so important.
See you then!
