The Hydrocharitaceae is a globally distributed family of mostly herbaceous, perennial, submerged or floating aquatic plants. Some species have become established ornamental plants and then serious weeds in the wild (notably Egeria, Elodea and Hydrilla).
The name is based on the genus Hydrocharis, which is derived from the Greek words hydro, 'water', and charis, 'grace, beauty'.
