The rock rose family (Cistaceae) is a family of herbaceous plants and small shrubs to fairly large shrubs. The plants often grow on sandy or calcareous soils. The family occurs worldwide, with emphasis on temperate or moderately warm regions, especially around the Mediterranean. Many species are used as ornamental plants.
In Belgium, there are two genera with a total of three species: rock roses (Helianthemum) with the yellow rock roses (Helianthemum nummularium) and the white rock roses (Helianthemum apenninum) and Tuberaria, the spotted rock roses (Tuberaria guttata).
