The milkwort family (Polygalaceae) consists of annual or perennial herbaceous plants, shrubs, trees and lianas with about 27 genera and about 900 known species. The family occurs worldwide, except in Antarctica and New Zealand.
More than half of the known species belong to the genus Polygala.
