The Alliaceae is a family of herbaceous perennials, mostly bulbous plants with single leaves. The leaves are flat, marrow-filled or hollow (usually pipe-shaped and hollow as in chives). The type genus is Allium, which has a large number of species, including those that are widely cultivated and consumed such as onion, Allium cepa, and leek, Allium porrum, as well as flavourings such as cultivated garlic, Allium sativum, or chives, Allium schoenoprasum.
This family usually grows in moderately warm and subtropical regions.
