The primrose family (Primulaceae) is a plant family with mostly herbaceous perennial plants, including some aquatic plants. The flower colours vary: yellow, blue, red, pink and white; multi-coloured flowers also occur. The distribution is cosmopolitan. This family includes the genera Primula, Cyclamen and Lysimachia.
The family is named after the genus Primula (Primrose), derived from the Latin 'primus' for 'first', and refers to the early flowering of many primroses.
Many species of Primula and Androsace are cultivated for their attractive flowers as pot plants, in rock gardens, or in garden borders. Some species of Lysimachia are used medicinally.
